Board Member Recruitment
Board Member Volunteer Job Description
Position Title: Member of the Board of Directors
Organization: ConnectMyVariant
Location: Remote (US-based or international, regular virtual meetings)
Position Type: Volunteer (Fiduciary and Governance Oversight)
About ConnectMyVariant
ConnectMyVariant is an innovative health-focused nonprofit dedicated to ending preventable hereditary diseases (such as hereditary cancers and cardiac conditions). We bridge the gaps between genomic medicine, digital community-building, and genetic genealogy. By providing open-access variant indexes, family outreach navigators, and evidence-based connection protocols, we empower individuals with pathogenic variants to identify distant relatives, share life-saving risk data, and promote cascade genetic testing.
Our Commitment to Equity & Inclusion
ConnectMyVariant believes everyone deserves access to genetic prevention. Genetic mutations do not discriminate, yet systemic disparities limit access to genomic medicine, and healthcare resources. We work to dismantle these barriers by ensuring our open-access tools, education, and support networks are culturally humble, accessible, and inclusive of all family structures and ancestral backgrounds.
We seek leadership that reflects the rich diversity of the global communities we serve. We encourage applications from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals.
We strive to build a board where diverse representation shapes our strategic direction, deepens our community trust, and ensures our outreach protocols serve those historically underserved by the medical system.
Position Purpose
ConnectMyVariant is expanding its Board of Directors to transition from an early-stage, research-backed initiative into a scalable international organization. Board Members share fiduciary, legal, and strategic responsibility for the organization. We seek individuals who combine deep technical or lived expertise with the collaborative spirit required to govern a health advocacy group.
Core Responsibilities
- Strategic Oversight: Advise on the growth of our digital variant forums, genetic genealogy partnerships, and medical community outreach frameworks, while embedding equity in our scaling strategies.
- Fiduciary & Legal Governance: Approve annual budgets, review financial audits, and ensure compliance with nonprofit regulations, data ethics, and genetic privacy guardrails.
- Ambassadorship & Network Catalyst: Serve as an advocate for ConnectMyVariant within your professional ecosystem (e.g., healthcare systems, bioinformatics networks, patient advocacy spaces).
- Organizational Sustainability: Assist in securing diversified funding streams, including grants, health system partnerships, and philanthropic donations.
Desired Profiles & Qualifications
We seek candidates who strongly align with one or more of these primary profiles:
- The Patient Voice / Advocate: Individual living with a known pathogenic variant with personal experience navigating cascade testing, relative outreach, and the unique challenges faced by patients in diverse or underserved communities.
- The Genomic / Clinical Expert: Genetic counselor or physician who understands the operational realities of preventive medicine and genomic health equity.
- The Genealogist / Tech Innovator: Specialist in genetic genealogy, bioinformatics, or data architecture who understands identity matching, family trees, and DTC (Direct-To-Consumer) DNA platforms.
- The Nonprofit / Business Scaling Anchor: Professional with proven experience in nonprofit accounting, legal compliance or scaling secure digital platforms.
What We Value in Every Board Member
We seek board members committed to health equity and passionate for our mission to take an active, hands-on role in the organization’s activities. Great candidates are collaborative, strong communicators, and aim to build bridges across disciplines and entities. We seek collaborative leaders with a willingness to listen and learn, and a deep respect for the lived expertise of those we serve.
Expected Commitment
- Term: 3 years, with possibility of renewal
- Meetings: Approximately 4-6 board meetings annually
- Active Support: Make ConnectMyVariant a philanthropic priority; support growth and sustainability through relationship-building, strategic partnerships, and/or grant opportunities; and contribute at least 5 hours a month of volunteer service or at least $5,000 annually (give or get from others).
